As shown by the aforementioned example of Craig Bellamy, its always surprising when Liverpool manage to bag a player from title-chasing Manchester City. In this case, however, it was for a whole host of reasons. In the summer of 2013, when Kolo Toure made the decision to move to Anfield on a two-year deal following the expiration of his contract at the Etihad Stadium, his reputation was in tatters. Having appeared sporadically for the Mancunian outfit since Vincent Kompany had been relocated from midfield to the centre of defence, the former Arsenal man looked a shadow of the player who had commanded a £16 million fee in 2009. Everybody knew that the player was surplus to requirements at City and would be leaving the club in the summer, but the predicted destination was somewhere in Greece, Turkey or the Middle-East - not a club with aspirations of a top four finish in the Premier League. It was certainly a move that raised more eyebrows than not, but looked a shrewd move after Toures first month at Anfield, having managed to keep a steady head and produce some composed performances for the Reds. Of course, he would fail to keep the momentum going, and threw in a few calamitous errors throughout the season for good measure.
