They might have thought they had won the lottery in the summer of 2010, as they emerged top of the pile in the race to sign recently-released Chelsea winger Joe Cole. He was one of the most high-profile and expensive free agents in recent years, and was linked with a host of top clubs upon Chelseas decision to toss him out of Stamford Bridge at the end of his contract. However, Chelsea clearly had foreseen his downfall in letting the stagnating winger go following the 2010 World Cup, with the likes of Arsenal and Spurs queuing up to wave hefty wage packets under the former West Ham wingers nose. Nobody could really have foreseen Cole ending up at Liverpool, even after Chelsea had parted ways with the £100 p/wk star, as the Reds had tumbled out of the Champions League places. Without the lure of Europes elite competition, surely they had no chance of enticing the 28 year old.
''Last season was a very disappointing season for the club in every respect, culminating in a popular manager leaving. I would never want to dupe the Liverpool public by telling them all is rosy now because Joe Cole has signed. - Roy Hodgson, July 2010.
Just as well, Roy, because things would get a whole lot worse, especially for him, before they got better at Anfield.
