Spurs were chasing Argentina defender Mateo Musacchio all summer and he was thought to have all but left Villarreal amidst the Lilywhites' interest. However, he opted to stay in Spain and committed his future to the La Liga club. Instead, Spurs signed his - and Mauricio Pochettino's - fellow countryman Federico Fazio. Fazio isn't necessarily a bad player, but he is yet to truly settle in to the team and his biggest contribution on the pitch so far was to get himself sent off in the 4-1 away defeat at Manchester City. Moreover, Musacchio is over two years younger than Fazio and is generally seen as a better player with a better future ahead of him. Generally, given the defensive problems Spurs are having and how well Musacchio is currently performing for Villarreal, it must be annoying for Spurs that they didn't nab him.
