Perhaps not unbeknown to many Everton fans, this transfer was not only incredibly surprising but also hugely embarrassing. It's July 2007. Everton have just finished 6th, (two points above Bolton?!). What better way to challenge for that heavenly 4th spot and all its empty promises than by signing one of the best players currently on the planet. Or so they thought... A star for Villarreal in their run to the Champions League semi-final, Everton's official website boasted the signing of the Argentine playmaker. Not only was this untrue but the cover up was especially dire. Claiming technical errors as a result of updating their website, Everton tried shifting the blame in a particularly heavy handed and fairly obvious manner. They had simply got it wrong. Instead Riquelme joined Boca Juniors in his native Argentina, where he was to finish his career. A superb player to watch, one can only imagine the thousands flocking to Goodison to see the man in action. As for the Everton FC website, pull the other Juan.
