This signing may not have been the most glamorous but on his day, Ferguson was a fantastic midfielder. Probably not gaining the respect he deserved (for being Scottish and playing in the SPL) Ferguson was a tenacious defensive midfielder who didn't shy away from a tackle. Everton's £4.5 million bid was accepted by Blackburn Rovers but homesick Ferguson instead chose a move back to his former club Rangers. In the same January transfer window as Bellamy and challenging for Champions League Football, Everton were desperate to consolidate their position near the top of the Premier League. Ferguson later went on to captain his country during Scotland's magnificent qualifying run against France, Italy and Ukraine, but ultimately missed out on qualification in the final round of matches. Ferguson, at the heart of everything good during this campaign, would have been a sound addition to Everton's gritty midfield.
