10 Shocking Liverpool Departures Nobody Expected

3. Robbie Fowler

As a member of the infamous Spice Boys Robbie Fowler got a lot of stick from the press, but was never anything but beloved by the Liverpool faithful. His name remains legend in Anfield, and for good reason: the local Scouse striker was at the team for nearly a decade, racking up a commendable 236 appearances and earning the nickname "God" for his ruthless approach to goal scoring during that time. Even a one season return performance between 2006 and 2007, where he netted another eight, was met with unusual good grace. That initial departure still stung for many, however. Fowler was one of those players that became synonymous with Liverpool, unlike the many more mercenary strikers of the modern Premier League. When he announced his plans to leave for Leeds United in 2001, after being dropped from the first team by manager GĂ©rard Houllier, was a shock to fans still getting over the similar Bosman nonsense Steve McManaman had pulled a couple of years prior.
