10 Shocking Liverpool Departures Nobody Expected

4. Daniel Agger

Agger was a promising young defender who won the Danish Superliga and the Danish Cup with his native team Brøndby IF before being imported to the Kop in 2006. Since then he made 75 Premier League appearances for the club and won the League Cup and Community Shield, making him one of the better decorated centre backs in the team's history. Then in August he scarpered back to Scandinavia with nary a word of explanation, just for "personal reasons". The current Liverpool squad isn't exactly famed for its defensive line - in fact it's been a good while since anybody's had much good to say about it - but Agger was a notable exception to that, and his absence has been felt greatly this season. According to a recent interview the Dane felt he and Brendan Rodgers had grown distant, leading to the manager favouring Mamadou Sakho as Martin Skrtel's centre-back partner.
