5. Doug Dedge Dies From Brain Trauma In Battle Without Rules

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xymMulMoWtE 31-year-old Doug Dedge was from Florida, and he was trained in contact karate. He even opened a school in Enterprise, Alabama for mixed martial arts. In March 1998, the father of five traveled to Kiev, Ukraine to compete in the International Super Challenge. The tournament was set up so it would be team Ukraine versus the world team. Dedge was one of three American fighters in the tournament. On March 16, he faced Yehven Zolotaryov in a 'Boi Bez Pravil' (Battle Without Rules). The only rules were that the fighters were not allowed to bite or gouge, otherwise everything was fair game. The bout lasted about five minutes when Zolotaryov pinned Dedge and bludgeoned him with about 14 punches before Dedge finally tapped out. Dedge then tried to stand, but immediately fell to the mat. He was taken off on a stretcher and taken to the hospital where he died two days later from severe brain trauma.
