10 Strangest Ever Chelsea Signings

2. Adrian Mutu

Neal Simpson/EMPICS SportNeal Simpson/EMPICS SportThere aren't too many players who get FIRED from their club, yet that's the fate that befell the disgraced Adrian Mutu in 2004. Mutu's career at Chelsea started out well enough after arriving at the club from Parma in 2003, scoring four goals in three matches. However, the forward quickly fell out with manager Jose Mourinho, with each party accusing the other of lying about whether the player was injured for a 2006 World Cup qualifying match against the Czech Republic. Mutu's Blues career then took even more of a bizarre twist when, in September 2004, he failed a drugs test for cocaine. Mutu was handed a seven month ban and £20,000 fine by the FA and his contract terminated by Chelsea, and wound up battling his former club at the Court of Arbitration for Sport after Chelsea sought compensation over the player's shocking breach of contract. Mutu was able to resurrect his playing career and spent time at Juventus and Fiorentina. He can today be found playing for Petrolul Ploie™ti.
