10 Strangest Ever Chelsea Signings

7. Raul Meireles

With the Blues on the lookout for a new midfielder following a serious injury to Michael Essien, they plumped for Meireles, but only because they failed to land their No.1 transfer target at the time - Luka Modric. Chelsea made a very public pursuit of Modric in 2011 but, after being rebuffed by the Croatian's club at the time, Tottenham Hotspur, signed Meireles for £12 million. The Portugal international would last just one season at Stamford Bridge and admitted he never wanted to leave the Reds to begin with, and only did so because of the potential of playing under Andre Villas-Boas, Chelsea's then-manager. Sadly, not even this partnership was enough to salvage Meireles's Chelsea career, and he wound up at Fenerbahçe after just 12 months, making but three appearances in his one full season with the club.
