Having been sent off against Liverpool for trying to kick Xabi Alonso's knee inside out, Barton was told by his caretaker boss that he shouldn't have been on the pitch and that it was a mistake to pick him. Barton, with typical grace responded that he was the best player at the club, and when told he was in fact "sh*t" he called Shearer a "sh*t manager with sh*t tactics". Ignoring the truth in that statement, that was just the start of their affair, as Barton has clashed with Shearer over social media since, calling him a "slaphead" and taking issue with his assessment that he was a thug.
