11 Players Newcastle Fans Wrongly Thought Were The Future
4. Aaron Spear
Football Manager sometimes has a lot to answer for. According to that game, Freddy Adu was destined to be the greatest player the world had ever seen because he was 15 and gifted and had a host of European suitors for his signature. Inevitably, when someone said he was the "next Pele", he was forever doomed, which is perhaps why he now plays for mighty Jagodina. The same thing happened to Aaron Spear, the 15-year-old Plymouth player who was allegedly scouted by Arsenal and Everton a long with Newcastle, and who was christened the new Wayne Rooney - presumably because he was young and good on Football Manager. Sadly Newcastle fans fell for the hype after the club prized him away from Plymouth (much to the annoyance of the South Coasters). If we were willing to jump through so many hoops to get the youngster, he surely had to be something special, right? Well, no, unfortunately he was another false-starter for the Wise transfer model, and he was released without every troubling the first-team.
