Frank McAvennie made his move to England when his good form in Scotland caught the eye of number of teams. He eventually signed for the Hammers in 1985 and in his first season, helped us to our highest ever league position. An unsuccessful second season followed and McAvennie went back to Scotland, signing for Celtic in a club record deal. He broke another record as West Ham's most expensive signing when he joined us for the second time for £1.25 million in 1989, moving back to London to be closer to his girlfriend at the time.
