12 Most Expensive Transfers In Premier League History

3. Mesut Ozil - Real Madrid To Arsenal (£42.4 Million)

The third most expensive player in Premier League history is Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, who completed a move from Real Madrid to the Emirates on transfer deadline day last year. It's hard to know what about the transfer was more of a shock - the fact Arsenal had bought a genuine top player, or whether they'd literally broken the bank to do so. Arsene Wenger's determination to cultivate talents through Arsenal's youth system (after snapping them up from obscurity, of course) was the philosophy for the entirety of his 17-year tenure up to the point Ozil signed. So what changed? Was it the pressure coming from every direction to finally add some world class quality to the ranks? To spend some money after being so tight on the purse strings for so long? We'll likely never find out the real answer, but it's signalled a complete shift in the guard. Alexis Sanchez has followed and there's likely going to be many more to come before the Frenchman hangs up his ridiculously long puffer coat.
