6. "I'm Going Back to America, Ta-Ra"

Back in the 70's, Paul Cannell was one of Tyneside's favourites, but due to his frosty relationship with boss Bill McGarry, his five-year stint at the club came to a bitter end in 1978. It's fair to say there was no love lost between player and coach.
''McGarry was hated. I f***ing hated him. He loved himself. He used to love squash, thought he was great at playing squash, and he says to me, "Cannell, do you like squash?". And I says, "Aye with a vodka in it. And I thought, oh well that's me finished, I'm going back to America, ta-ra."
And why did Cannell feel that he had to leave England on a permanent basis?
"F*****ing Bill McGarry, the tw**. I'd been to America on loan in 1976 and did pretty well and came back and that's when Gordon Lee had taken over, so I played regularly for a couple of seasons. And then Bill McGarry came in, and I f****ing hated him. I said that I hated him and someone went and told him. He pulled me and said, 'We don't get on do we'. But I'd heard that the Washington Diplomats wanted to sign me and I said I just want to go to America."
