There is no doubting that the SackPardew.com movement would have loved to see Alan Pardew removed from his ill-kept job at Newcastle, but that doesn't mean they had any impact on him actually leaving.

The reality is that Pardew answered a lucrative call home from a team willing to give him a hefty pay-rise and more rope to hang himself with. His comparative successes that followed at Palace only pull the wool thinly over the fact that he is a terrible tactician (which will be found out next year).

The most jaw-dropping part of his departure was the media martyrdom lavished on him, and the despicable "told you so" accusations that suggested Newcastle fans had hounded him out. He's got thick skin - had the Palace offer not come up, he would still be in the North East, don't doubt it.

And then fans from other clubs - the same ones who seem obsessed with the comparative size of their teams (Villa and Everton mostly) - jumped on the bandwagon to laugh at Newcastle for wanting something better. How dare fans desire more than mediocrity?!

Such is modern football: for all the claims of community, some fans will all-too-quickly fire accusations of delusion at Newcastle, and the media won't bother to look at the truth before fanning those flames.
