Lawrie McMenemy guided Sunderland into one of the bleakest situations in the club's history during a spell as boss, starting in 1985. After a successful reign at Southampton in the top division, McMenemy took charge of Sunderland who had just fallen into the Second Division, and was made the highest paid manager in the country. There were high expectations that he was the man to lead the club back into the First Division, but fans were sorely let down, as he actually dragged Sunderland into another relegation battle before quitting weeks before they crashed into the Third Division.
