After being released aged 17 from Nottingham Forest, Shaun Wright-Philips was snapped up by Manchester City and spent the next six years becoming one of the hottest homegrown players in the Premier League. After amassing 26 goals in 153 appearances for the club he found himself on Jose Mourinho's radar, completing a move back to his native London on 18th July 2005.

At Stamford Bridge, Wright-Phillips found it difficult to force his way into such a strong side. Chelsea were champions at this point and Wright-Phillips was used primarily as a squad player with Joe Cole and Arjen Robben preferred on the wings. He made 82 appearances over the next three years and scored four goals, picking up a Premier League winner's medal in the process.

By this point all had changed back at Manchester City. The oil money had arrived and the newly crowned Noisy Neighbours were buying up a competitive team as quickly as they could.

Wright-Phillips returned for less than half what he'd cost Chelsea a few years before. Again, he found himself a squad player used in rotation but earned a respectable 64 caps and 9 goals, unfortunately leaving before their seminal League Title win in 2012.
