15 British Players Who Returned To Their Former Clubs

4. Sol Campbell

There seems to be a pattern emerging of footballing oddballs on this list. Sol Campbell went from solid-as-a-rock defensive hero (unless you're a Spurs fan) to very strange man indeed when, in 2009, he swapped the Premier League for a FIVE-YEAR CONTRACT (he was already in thirty-five at this point) at League Two side Notts County.

He honoured this contract to the tune of one appearance before heading back to Arsenal to maintain his fitness before returning to them properly in January 2010.

Due to injuries to Gallas and Vermaelen he found himself back in the starting line-up and played well, even prompting some to lobby for an England recall as World Cup 2010 was just around the corner. Ultimately this didn't happen but fair play to the guy for coming back from serious personal and professional difficulties to turn out eleven more times for one of the top teams in European football.
