20 Best Rangers Players Of The Modern Era

7. Richard Gough

As far as Rangers captains go, Richard Gough must surely rank as one of the absolute best in the club's rich history. In many ways, Gough was the player equivalent of the gaffer, Walter Smith, a cool head in the dressing room who was able to guide everyone from savvy veterans to those looking to cut their teeth at Ibrox and become staples in the first team. Even during his run as a player, the big defender was considered by many to be a stick-on future Rangers manager, the man just had that air about him. Of course, as of yet, Gough hasn't stepped into the hot seat, and it doesn't exactly look likely going forward, but looking backwards, what a career he had as a crucial member of the Rangers back line. Signed in 1987 from Tottenham Hotspur, Richard Gough was the captain when the Gers captured the infamous '9 In A Row' which assured every member of the playing squad a place in history. Long before that however, the big man had become a favourite. Well known for putting his head in where it hurt, it wasn't uncommon to see Gough sporting a bandage with blood on it during a cup final or important fixture, because winning meant a lot to him.
