20 Best Rangers Players Of The Modern Era

5. Barry Ferguson

These days, Barry Ferguson's links with Rangers extend only to newspaper articles discussing the current state of the club the man grew up supporting, but there was a time when the Scotsman was able to call himself the captain of Glasgow Rangers. Wearing the armband with pride, Ferguson was a silky-smooth midfielder who also had great battling qualities. Acting as almost a throwback to the Walter Smith-led '9 In A Row' era, it was with those final squads under Smith that Ferguson made his first number of top team appearances. From the off, whilst he was young, Barry looked composed, and he'd only become an even more important part of the Rangers set up when Dick Advocaat took charge as boss in 1998. It was Advocaat who eventually made Ferguson captain at the age of 22, an unprecedented age to lead such a massive club. Thriving under the pressure, Barry Ferguson would later lead Rangers to a domestic treble in season 2002-2003, and although several spells in the English game haven't been kind to him, his career at Ibrox most certainly was.
