After salvaging the club from the ruinous tenures of Dalglish and Guillit, Bobby Robson built his Newcastle United side up to have two real stabs at the title and a historic run in the Champion's League - this was the kit they did it in. Whilst not offering any new design elements or even being particularly clever, the 2001 outing was a long awaited return to pure black and white design. The last two kits had incorporated a gold of yellow or blue, and this jersey was a reminder of how easy the monochrome is to get right. Shame about the NTL logo of course. Using a much wider stripe than its predecessors, the kit still appears in the minds-eye of any Newcastle fan recalling those nights in Rotterdam, Milan, and North London.
