£12 million still stands as the biggest sum of money a Scottish professional football team have paid to sign any player in history, but that's one record that Rangers don't really want. In reality, Tore Andre Flo would have had to score a hat-trick every game in order to justify his price tag, both domestically and in Europe. It was silly money then and it's silly money now, a damning verdict on the David Murray-led Rangers of old and how they did business in the transfer market. Leaping to his defence, the Norwegian striker did had a decent goal tally whilst at Ibrox, scoring 29 times in 53 appearances, but that was never going to be enough to have fans satisfied after such a colossal sum of cash was stumped up to secure his services. It seems fair to assume that Rangers only agreed to the fee in order to trump Celtic, who had bought Chris Sutton for £6 million. David Murray had long said that when his rivals put down £1, he would put down £2, which isn't a sure fire recipe for success. Rangers teams weren't historically built by throwing money at things, and Flo was the straw that broke the camel's back for the excessive Murray-era. After Advocaat, Alex McLeish could have done with that £12 million to build a team!
