Much like many who had come before him, Rangers fans had great hopes when news broke that the club had signed Andy Webster on a loan deal from Wigan in 2007. Hearts were initially furious at the reports, because they thought they had a clause in place which meant the Scot couldn't appear for any other club in his homeland for 12 months after they had lost him to Wigan. They didn't, and Webster was a Rangers player, following a lot of controversy about a supposed new 'Webster Rule'. The details are convoluted, but the defender basically exorcised a right to terminate his own contract with the Edinburgh club, and made the move to England. All in all, the centre back would only make a grand total of 1 appearance at Ibrox, which made the whole legal mess a colossal waste of time. Injuries and general fitness problems when he wasn't sidelined meant Andy Webster was a disaster. Rangers fans looked on with much bemusement, as the player had a stellar season with Dundee United, and would later rejoin Hearts. Basically, Webster took 3 years worth of pay from Rangers for 1 game.
