Another cliche that falls at the poetic end of the spectrum, 'it was always rising' refers to a shot - usually a free kick - that was destined to miss the target from the minute it left the player's boot. The tragic thing about this cliche is that it's generally used to cover up a commentator's shame, for while everyone else in the stadium could see from the moment of impact that the shot was going wide, the commentator is convinced it's going into the top corner of the net until the very second it doesn't. Hence the scrambled insistence that he knew it was a dud all along, but has to make the most of it to keep the folks at home entertained. Right? Wrong.
