5 Awesome Moments For The British Lions In Australia
4. Strong Arm of the Law
Games involving the Lions have often become what's known as "a bit tasty". Get your retaliation in first. Take no prisoners. The 99 call. All have become part of rugby lore, and it's not hard to see why. On your own in a hostile country for weeks on end, with a one-eyed media on your backs at all times, and games often played under partisan referees, it's very easy for a siege mentality to develop, and hard play to spill over into brawling. And let's face it, everyone loves it. Having been beaten comprehensively in the first test, the Lions were determined not to lose again, and decided targeting Nick Farr-Jones, the Aussie scrum half, would be a key to victory. Welsh scrum-half Robert Jones niggled and harried his opposite number throughout the game until finally he stepped on the Wallaby's foot at a scrum. This sent Farr-Jones over the edge and he furiously shoved the Lion's number 9 who in turn flew back at him. The forwards broke from the scrum in delight at seeing the two little men rolling around the floor, and, never needing much of an excuse, decided they wanted a piece of the action, promptly turning the game into a mass fight. As the Lions pack contained P.C. Wade Dooley, P.C. Dean Richards, Chief Inspector Paul Ackford, and Solicitor Brian Moore, this has to be remembered as the most legal illegal fight in rugby history. Even the ref got involved...
Richard has been playing video games since the days of the BBC Micro, (and incidentally when is Chuckie Egg going to get a reboot?) He is currently available for the post of Head of Marketing at Nintendo, seeing as no-one else seems to be doing the job. He's also a major fan of fantasy/sf books and is just waiting for his novel about an assassin who doesn't wear a hood to get picked up.
