5 Awesome Newcastle United Captains (And 5 That Sucked)

3. Alan Shearer

A genuine leader of men and the archetypal Geordie captain, Shearer was a warrior who led from the front in black and white, wearing the armband predominantly during Sir Bobby Robson's five-year reign and skippering us through an unforgettable Champions League campaign. Shearer's playing style was often characterised as that of a classic English centre-forward and he was a captain we could so often rely on when to situation required him dig us out of a very deep hole. When in peril we'd always dial the number nine. 206 goals only tells half the story of his impact for Newcastle during his six years as our commander-in-chief. And he would so often oblige in our hour of need with a textbook Shearer goal or a combative performance that would leave many a centre-back nursing some painful bruises following a 90 minutes of being physically tormented by the greatest striker ever to wear a black and white shirt.
