5 Awesome Newcastle United Captains (And 5 That Sucked)

2. Joe Harvey

The club's longest serving captain and a bonafide legend; Harvey was Mr Newcastle during his eight years at St James' Park and skippered us during our glory days mid-way through the twentieth century when we lifted consecutive FA Cups in 1951 and 1952. Harvey was a distinguished and authoritative captain who always commanded the utmost respect from his Magpies team-mates throughout his occupancy of the armband he seized early on in his Toon career following an impressive display on his debut against Barnsley. After retiring in 1953 at the relatively young age of 34 Harvey returned 'home' eight years later when he took up the managerial baton on Tyneside and guided us to the Fairs Cup in 1969 which still stands as the last major trophy to be deposited into our trophy cabinet.
