5 Best Newcastle United Player Performances Of 2015
2. Jonas Gutierrez Saves Newcastle's Skin On Final Day
Jonas Gutierrez, who himself battled back from the depths of despair in his fight against cancer, did the same for a club that shamelessly disregarded him at his darkest hour. Simply put, he didn't have to, but he wanted to anyway. His contribution to Newcastle United's current Premier League status can't be underestimated. This crucial display showed that the Argentine is cut from the same cloth as the late Pavel Srníek in terms of taking the club and city of Newcastle to his heart, and having the fans show that same affection back to him. But the stage was set for the returning winger to save The Magpies' bacon on a nervy afternoon at St James' Park. NUFC still could have been relegated on the final day of the season against a West Ham side lost Premier League no man's land. An assist, goal (albeit deflected, but I'm not awarding it to anyone else), and all round glorious display of grit and determination epitomised all that the Newcastle United squad of 2014/15 as a whole lacked, but qualities Jonas had in spades. Spider-Man got the crowd going with his tireless workmanship, with a dash of quality when it mattered, creating the best atmosphere heard around NE1 for many a year. It's an afternoon that will live long in the memory of all that were there. Utterly magical.
