Yet ref Herb Dean was still standing there. Was Mitrione trying to show some mercy to his opponent? Then after a moment after Dean declined to stop the fight, he ran in for one last punch, and then Dean mercifully waved things off. What the heck happened? First, lets be clear - this was no cheap shot. If the ref doesn't call off the action, an opponent is fair game. Mitrione explained after the fight that he saw Gonzaga moving towards his legs and was wary of the fighter's Jiu-jitsu game, so he backed off, regrouped, then went in for the final punch. It only looked confusing to fans and the commentators, who weren't aware of the reason behind Mitrione's hesitance.
