3. Bobby Moore
Often cited as the single best defender England have ever had, and one of the best the entire world has ever seen, Bobby Moore was one of the first names I thought of when compiling this list. His insane tackling ability and reading of the game - he was incredibly good at coming from behind a striker with their back to goal to intercept oncoming balls, for instance - set him apart from most competitors. A dominant leader on the field, Moore won over 100 caps for England and captained them to their World Cup triumph. He also managed to win an FA Cup, as well as a Cup Winners' Cup and International Soccer League, with West Ham United. Amongst his individual honours were four West Ham Player of the Year awards, and Pele himself regards Moore as the best defender he ever played against. High praise indeed.
