5 Most Surprising Football Transfer Stories Of 2013/2014

5. Gareth Bale€™s Asking Price

Real Madrid are enamored with Gareth Bale, and they have coveted signing him for quite a while. I remember hearing transfer rumors involving the sale of Bale to Madrid during the past few transfer windows, but nothing happened until this summer. It seems a foregone conclusion that Bale will be playing for Madrid within the next few weeks. That€™s not the surprising part of this transfer. That part belongs to the astronomical asking price for Bale. 100 million is what Spurs want for him, and they don€™t seem to want to budge or accept a part-exchange deal. They want the full £100 million, and, to be fair, if Madrid are willing to pay that price, then Spurs are well within their rights to ask for the fee. But, come off it. £100 million for one player? You could buy an entire football team for that price. You could buy Mario Gotze 3 times over. It€™s insane. No one is debating whether Bale is a good player or not €“ he is obviously a very special talent. I happen to love his direct style of play, and I think he€™s a fantastic attacking midfielder. But do I think he, or anybody else in the world of football, is worth that much money? Not even a little bit.
