5 Things Football Fans Don’t Understand About The Sport

2. Transfers

I€™ve lost count of the times that I€™ve heard someone say, €œWe€™ve sold him for £28 million, so now we have £28 million to spend on new players.€ This simply isn€™t the case. Arsenal€™s Arsene Wenger has been heavily criticised for this in the past, especially when Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri were sold to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively. The club made a huge profit overall from the transfers, but it does not mean that Wenger had that amount of money to spend on new players. The club will have the profit from the sale but Wenger may only be given half of that fund to spend on players, whilst the rest of it could go to paying debt or other financial commitments. The manager will have to make do with what he has to spend and that is not his decision. In the situations when a club is not making any player signings, especially during the summer, then some fans will immediately start to get nervous about the future of the club and the upcoming season. Despite not being employed by the club and having no involvement in any potential transfers, the fans will still worry. It is important to remember that a football club is just another business. They want the same result as you do and that is to be successful. But there are many different factors that go into being a successful business. So when the club announces a transfer by surprise, it was meant to be that way. A deal had been negotiated without the involvement of the press or the fans and that is exactly how it should be conducted.
