Back in 2009, after learning of his then-spouse's infidelity, he assaulted her on multiple occasions. Chope, then in the military, was given non-judicial punishment. Somehow, this little bit of background information eluded the UFC during their background check process (something we imagine is a UFC intern scanning the first page of Google results for a fighter's name). Addressing the issue at a media event in April 2014, Dana White stated " seems like a great guy and he's got his stuff together, but a few years ago he didn't sound like such a great guy. You put your hands on your girlfriend or your wife and you're accused of it. You beat her three times or whatever you did, that's a tough one to overcome." Chope's now ex-wife actually appeared in a video statement with the fighter asking White to reconsider, given they had become friends since their split and the incident was five years or so in the past.
