8 Sports That Desperately Need A Rule Change
7. Strategically Placed Jumps - Figure Skating
This is a rule that was added recently and has already caused some debate. Within scoring, competitors are given a 10% bonus when executing jumps in the second half of their routine. Since then, skaters have strategically placed their jumps in the second half in order to gain more points.
This essentially means a better routine can lose to another which takes advantage on the jumps in the second half rule. The most well-known case of this was is Pyeongchang. Competitors Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova were the strongest players on ice. Medvedeva had a crowd pleasing routine and was destined to win. But she achieved the same score as Zagitova, and with the combined marks of the earlier judges, Alina took away the gold instead by technicality.
Thankfully, as this is a new rule which has repeatedly come under disapproval by fans, it is likely to be changed by the ISU.
