8 Sports That Desperately Need A Rule Change

6. Bench Pressing Competitors

Within the competitive sport of powerlifting, the bench press has more technical rules than any other lift. They are very specific and must be strictly followed in order to pass a lift successfully. The main basis of it is to keep your head, shoulders and buttocks in contact with the bench, whilst having your feet flat on the floor. On top of that, it is a requirement to pause the weight on your chest before pressing with a sustained forward motion of the barbell.

However, there's no mention of keeping your back pressed to the bench, which often leads to players elevating their chest by arching the back, whilst still having the shoulders and buttocks in contact. The benefit to this is that you can reduce the range of motion required to lift the weight, as well as helping to stabilize the shoulder joint.

Whilst this is technically not breaking the rules, it does give an unfair advantage and has often caused debate that competitors using the back arch is a form of cheating.
