9 Football Legends Who Ended Up Hated By Their Fans

2. Emmanuel Adebayor

The Togolese marksman was brought to Arsenal in 2005, and though he disappointed in his debut season, 46 goals in 85 games turned some heads from fans as well as potential suitors willing to pay a lot for him. Eventually, Adebayor stuck with England, but not with Arsenal. In 2009, Manchester City continued their relentless spending by acquiring the big man€™s services, and he repaid them by scoring three goals in as many games at City, before City hosted Arsenal and he was accused of deliberately kicking Robin Van Persie in the face. He then went on to become a villain of pantomime proportions, as he scored against his former side and decided to gallop down the pitch to celebrate in front of Arsenal fans, who basically tried to climb over each other to show him exactly what they thought of him. Eventually, and inevitably, Adebayor became surplus at City and moved for an unspectacular spell at Real Madrid, before returning to London on loan with the only club such a pantomime figure would ever sign for - Spurs. He finished 2011/12 as their top scorer, and Arsenal fans are unlikely to ever forgive him - either for the City celebration, or his defection to Tottenham.
