9 Football Legends Who Ended Up Hated By Their Fans

3. Sol Campbell

Club legend? Debatable, hated? Certainly, since Sol Campbell will forever be remembered as €œJudas€ by the Tottenham faithful. In his early years, Campbell experimented in every defensive position offered to him, but it was the decline of Gary Mabbutt that gifted him a regular spot, and over six seasons he grew into one of England€™s finest defenders. Supporters were fully aware of Campbell€™s unrest down the years, and it was no secret that he dreamed of the Champions League, which Spurs clearly couldn€™t offer at the time. So, in an infamous move, Campbell became the first player to swap North London allegiances in 23 years, turning down the club's offer to make him their highest paid player, despite his claims that he gave them ample opportunity to offer him a deal that would have kept him at Tottenham. A formidable onslaught of hate followed and to make matters worse, Campbell went on to enjoy instant success, claiming both the Premier League and FA Cup titles in his first season with Arsenal. Tottenham were offered a chance of redemption on the last day of the 2003/04 campaign. Campbell rocked up at White Hart Lane knowing Arsenal could win the league yet again, but Spurs were unable to spoil the party, whilst Campbell led Arsenal to the championship, thus securing his position in the Tottenham Hall Of Hate.
