9 Newcastle Players Who Are Fighting For Their Toon Futures

7) Sylvain Marveaux

Like Ferguson, another forgotten winger hoping to recapture his form after a spell on loan. Following a season at Guingamp in his native France, he bagged three goals and six assists in 33 appearances and regained match fitness after a patchy record with injuries in the North East. Alan Pardew did not appear to rate the former Rennes star and left him frustrated on the bench, before sending him to train the reserves last pre-season, then allowing him to link up with Guingamp. With Steve McClaren in charge, there is a chance for Marveaux to break back into the reckoning though after being caught on camera saying the club "blacklisted" him last season and that he was only still a Newcastle player because a permanent deal fell through, the ex-French Under 21 international really needs a fleet-footed pre-season. Current likelihood of coming back: 2/10Recommendation: Marveaux must mend his bridges with the club and try to put the last few seasons behind him. Gifted with the ball at his feet, he arrived to much excitement, with Newcastle beating off Liverpool for his signature. Technically good, his main problem in the Premier League has been his lack of strength, too easily shrugged off the ball and not showing the fight to hold off defenders. If Marveaux bulks up in the gym and shows some fight, Newcastle fans could see a different threat than has previously turned up and could show why he generated such attention in 2011. The reality is that Marveaux doesn't look settled in Newcastle but how much of that is due to Alan Pardew's use (or rather, lack of it) of the winger is up for debate. Again, if Aarons can't stay healthy and if he outshines Cabella and Gouffran in pre-season, there is nothing to say his exile to the reserves last summer will happen again.
