9 Newcastle Players Who Are Fighting For Their Toon Futures

8) Shane Ferguson

The Northern Irishmen's career has stalled since signing a five-year contract in May 2011 as injuries, loan moves and a lack of form have taken their toll. Blessed with a good left foot, Ferguson is comfortable at left-back or in a more advanced role further up the wing, offering versatility and a threat with his crossing ability and flashes of pace. Having only played two games last season - both in the Scottish Championship play-offs for Rangers - Ferguson needs game time. He was once good enough that Joe Kinnear infamously scouted him for his own club while on loan at Birmingham City and his performances for Northern Ireland have been solid when he has appeared so his situation is not completely hopeless but he is going to need a massive change in fortune to get a new contract. Current likelihood of coming back: 1/10Recommendation: With Massaido Haidara and Paul Dummett, who appears to be on the verge of a new deal, in front of him at left0back, it would seem wise for Ferguson to target a left-wing spot. Yoan Gouffran was one of Newcastle's worst players last season, Remy Cabella has yet to prove he is fit to deal with the physicality of the English game and Rolando Aarons has not been able to stay healthy. A role higher up the pitch would suit his crossing ability and his pace could torment opposition defenders providing injuries haven't sapped it away. As harsh as it sounds though, Ferguson also probably needs other players to lose form or pick up knocks to even get a sniff at the first team again.
