Arsenal 1-3 Bayern Munich - 5 Things We Learned

3. Theo Walcott Doesn't Turn Up For The Big Occasions

Walcott During Theo Walcott€™s protracted contract stand-off with the club, it is understood one of the key factors in him signing a contract extension at the Emirates was the promise that he would be afforded a more prominent, attacking role in the side. Domestically, it has paid off. He is the top goalscorer at Arsenal with 18 strikes this season with 11 of those coming in the league, one in the doomed FA Cup campaign, five in the equally as doomed League Cup campaign and just one more in Europe. The fact is, he doesn€™t turn up for the big games. That he has scored just once for his team in Europe this season tells you all you need to know. Last night he was a complete anonymity and left no lasting imprint on the game at all. Arsenal actually played better when he moved to an attacking midfield role with Podolski, then Giroud taking over the reins up front in the second half. Wenger€™s inability or failure to bring in a new all-out goalscorer like David Villa in January now seems more and more like a massive mistake. Arsenal have been crying out for a prodigious striker in the ilk of Thierry Henry for years and they haven€™t bought one. Unbelievable.
