Arsenal: 10 Players Wenger Must Sign In January

8. Brede Hangeland

Club: Fulham Position: Centre-Back Value: £3-5m In all honesty, if Brede Hangeland decides to move on to pastures new rather than sign a contract extension at Craven Cottage, he will have a host of suitors throughout the Premier League. I've already suggested that the big stopper would add experience and poise to the Man United back-line, and indeed the same could be said of Arsenal or Newcastle United, who have both been credited with interest in the player recently. Arsenal in particular could do with some stability in defence, and someone with a good deal of Premier League experience, as well as a man of Hangeland's particular strengths - strong in the air, good with the ball at his feet, and well aware of when to tackle - would fit the bill perfectly. If he doesn't sign a contract extension, Arsenal could enter the fray with a relatively low bid, to capitalise on Fulham's fear of losing him for nothing at the end of the season - at which stage the Norwegian could no doubt have his pick of clubs. For that money Arsenal would be getting a strong, very capable centre-half with the aerial prowess that seems to come at a premium these days, and with an injury record that is all but unblemished. He might be old, but he is the type of player who could play top level for another four years without losing too much of his ability.
