The re-signing of the combative French midfielder on a free transfer has been the shrewdest piece of business Arsene Wenger has completed in the transfer window. The Gunners have been crying out for no nonsense defensive enforcer since a certain Mr Flamini left for AC Milan in 2008. That was the last season Arsenal mounted a serious title challenge with a midfield of Fabregas, Hleb and Rosicky benefiting from Mathieus attributes. I know people will mention Alex Song but he lacked the tactical nous to play this role and also saw himself as more of a playmaker than a destroyer. This is where Flamini is so good; he knows his limitations, wins the ball and gives it simple to someone with more skill. Do not underestimate the importance of Flamini to the side; he was missing from Arsenals only defeat on the opening day of the season. His willingness to shout and organise the team is another noticeable difference from previous campaigns. He is also the first in the thick of it when one of Arsenals more fragile players gets fouled and why I cant condone such behaviour it helps morale knowing your buddys got your back.
