Arsenal Transfers: 10 Players Arsene Wenger Should Never Have Signed
4. Park Chu-Young
Efforts to sell football jerseys across the world have shot up ten-fold in recent years, as powerful Premier League clubs attempt to spread their global reach.
Signing players who hail from target-market geographical areas has been a key part of that strategy for many sides, but with limited success on the pitch.
South Korean striker Park Chu-Young jettisoned a planned medical at Lille to join Arsenal at a cost of around £3.5 million, having made a decent impression at Monaco previously.
However, it proved to be a few million quid down the drain, as Park failed miserably to make the grade when making a solitary Premier League appearance. Meanwhile, his only goal materialised in a League Cup clash against Bolton Wanderers, and it had become abundantly clear why he’d been so eager to dump Lille in favour of the Gunners.
Park obviously couldn’t believe his luck when he received the call from London, but neither could Arsene Wenger when he realised how much of a dud he had on his hands.
