Arsenal Transfers: 10 Players Arsene Wenger Should Never Have Signed

3. Sebastien Squillaci

Sebastien Squillaci was, without doubt, one of the worst defenders to pull on an Arsenal shirt.

Another ex-Monaco player, he moved to England from Sevilla for £4 million in 2010, with Wenger putting his in-depth background knowledge of the principality club into practice once more.

Squillaci was involved regularly throughout his first season at the Emirates, but appeared far shakier than fellow recruit Laurent Koscielny.

Apparently, his manager was far from convinced and consequently brought Per Mertesacker in a year later, which restricted the Frenchman to just six outings in his second term.

One of those appearances came in a February 2012 FA Cup loss at Sunderland, where he was introduced as a substitute, deflected the Black Cats’ opener from Kieran Richardson beyond his own goalkeeper and latterly got subbed back off the pitch through supposed injury.

It’s not entirely obvious exactly how and why Squillaci made it into the French national team on 21 occasions.
