Arsenal Transfers: 5 Key Players Whose Contracts Are Ending Soon

3. Mikel Arteta (2015)

The Spanish midfielder has won many plaudits for his transition from Everton regular to extremely versatile replacement for Arsenal's younger first team players, and he has even gained the vice captaincy for his assured performances. However, now 31, the player's contract expires in the summer of 2015, and with his role in the team requiring massive amounts of energy and stamina, it is touch and go as to whether Wenger will extend his deal with the club, who will be 33 when it runs out. The uncapped Spaniard has been in superb form for the Gunners recently, and since his move from Everton as part of a transfer deadline day scramble from the club in 2011, he has undoubtedly been one of their most consistent players, and losing him when his deal runs out could be a mistake they will regret. Despite his age at that point, he would still be able to provide cover for other players and brings an air of experience to the team, helping the youngsters through, and this kind of mentor for other players could prove invaluable. A real surprise success at the club, Arteta will be looking to extend his deal at the club over the next 12 months or so, and Wenger would be a fool not to do so.
