Goalkeeper: Richard Wright
Beginning with the un-envied position of goalkeeper, it might be seen as unfair to choose the worst of this position. Every time a goal is scored the keeper has to be beaten, and they are the last line of defence against some of the most lethal strikers the world of football have ever seen. However, when we discuss Arsenal, it is usually quite easy to pick an entire teams worth of bad goalkeepers. So the difficulty for me was not finding a bad keeper, but which of the many stood above as the very worst. I have chosen Richard Wright, the man
who joined Arsenal for around £2m in 2001, and was handed a five-year contract as the long-term successor for the aging David Seaman. Wright was an experienced goalkeeper, having made 298 appearances for Ipswich in the First Division and the Premier League. Despite an injury to Seaman giving him an extended period in the first-team, the main event Wright is remembered for is punching the ball into his own net against Charlton. He began to be upstaged by the young upstart Stuart Taylor (another contender for this award), and only played a significant amount in the FA Cup, but not the final. Wright left one year into his five-year deal to go to Everton, and today is part of the Manchester City squad. Yeah, I bet last sentence shocked you enough to Google it.
