Best Premier League XI Ever
Striker: Alan Shearer
It had to be Big Al up top. The only real rival to Roy Keane for who sums up the Premier League spirit, the all time top scorer was an automatic selection. He might have only won the league once (with Blackburn Rovers, no less), but that just makes his stats all the more impressive.
Geordie hero Alan Shearer spent the bulk of his career at boyhood club Newcastle, winning absolutely nothing. It’s doubtful that bothers him too much, as it established him as a local legend and didn’t hold him back in the goalscoring charts.
Shearer has 260 Premier League goals, 52 more than second placed Wayne Rooney and 96 more than nearest playing competitor, Sergio Aguero. Most famous for his penalties, headers and fox in the box finishes, his netbusting volley against Everton is one of the league’s best ever goals too.
In terms of technical ability, Shearer wouldn’t even be in the top ten for strikers. Realistically though, strikers are there for one reason: to score goals. Nobody was better at that than Big Al.
