Best Premier League XI Ever
Striker: Sergio Aguero
Yes, this means no Thierry Henry. Along with Wayne Rooney, Andy Cole, Dennis Bergkamp, Didier Drogba, Robbie Fowler and Robin Van Persie, the Frenchman was in the running, and does constitute the obvious choice. Shearer, as top scorer by some distance, was a dead cert, but there was plenty of competition for his strike partner.
In legends teams like this, the odds are stacked against newbies. It’s similar to how no band will ever be better than The Beatles, no film better than The Godfather. It doesn’t matter anyone’s personal opinion on the matter; it just seems to be an unwritten rule.
Long established as the Premier League’s best foreign striker, Henry suffocates competition. Compared to Aguero though, it’s easy to see him as slightly second best.
Aguero has eleven fewer goals, but he’s also played 51 fewer games, giving him a much better goals per game ratio. He’s won the league four times too; double the amount of Henry. It's true that Henry was a huge part of the Invincibles, and there's definitely an argument to be made that only having Ashley Cole from that legendary team does them a disservice. If Shearer's in on the back of his goals though, Aguero will soon eclipse Henry and shows no signs of slowing down.
Away from the comparison, no one can argue Aguero’s talent. He plays the poacher as easily as he pops it in the net from 25 yards. A fluid, thoroughly modern player worthy of a place in the XI.
