The late Dean Richards joined Spurs after impressing at both Wolverhampton Wanderers and then at Southampton in the Premier League. In his time at Wolves, he attracted attention from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, but finally made his way to the top flight when Dave Jones signed him for the Saints for nothing. After three seasons at the Dell (and, subsequently, St. Mary's), Richards joined Spurs for £8.1 million and, despite an injury-hit spell at White Hart Lane, was extremely capable when he played - but he did not fulfil his ambition of playing for England. All in all, Richards managed 73 Premier League appearances for Spurs in his near-four year spell at the club - all of which came from the start. He also played eight times in cup competitions. Sadly, the 6' 2" commanding centre back was forced to retire in 2005, as he was told that he risked brain injuries if he kept paying. Even more saddening, Richards passed away in 2011 after a long battle with cancer. He was just 36. Spurs and Wolves have since met in a Premier League game that was designated as a tribute to the man.
